Freedom Schooling by Grace Lee Boggs $10.00 each + $2.00 SH Send check / money order to Boggs Center 3064 Field St Detroit Mi 48214 The articles in this pamphlet have been selected from the weekly columns that Grace Lee Boggs writes for the Fresh Ideas page of the Michigan Citizen. Grace has been exploring solutions to the deepening schools crisis ever since the 1960s when she taught in the Detroit Public Schools and was active in the Black Power and Community Control of Schools movement. Her 1969 speech, "Education: The Great Obsession," has been widely reprinted; for example, in the 1974 Harvard Educational Review monograph edited by the Institute of the Black World, and in Education to Govern, a National Organization for an American Revolution pamphlet which went through three printings. In 1992, together with her late husband, James Boggs, Shea Howell and others, she co-founded Detroit Summer, an intergenerational, multicultural youth program/movement to rebuild, redefine and respirit Detroit from the ground up. Beginning as a three week project, this program is now year- round. Her autobiography, Living for Change (University of Minnesota Press, 1998) is used in university classes in Detroit history and in African American and Asian American Studies.
